Chapter 325 Clinking Glasses
Chapter 325 Clinking Glasses
The luxurious black sedan drove smoothly along the main road.
The air conditioning vents inside the car were blowing a gentle warm breeze, blocking out the cold air from outside, but the air pressure inside the car was noticeably low, and none of the three people spoke.
Xiao Bai sat on the right side of the back seat, leaning slightly against the car door, his chin resting on the back of his hand, his gaze unfocused as he watched the street scene rushing past the car window.
She didn't really want to go home. The thought had been lingering in her mind for a while.
It's not that I don't want to see my parents, it's that I know that once I see them, the conversations will always end up back to the same thing.
She knew her mother's mouth well. Outside, she was like a UN representative, speaking flawlessly, but at home, she was just an ordinary mother, nagging without holding back.
Xiao Bai sighed inwardly. It had been more than half a year since they last met. Even if they nagged, it would only last one night. She could just bear it and it would pass. She told herself this.
The car was exceptionally quiet, with only a slight tire noise audible.
Every few hundred meters along both sides of the road, you can see a group of men in black on duty, dressed in standard black combat uniforms, standing ramrod straight.
Xiao Bai noticed that the patrol teams were positioned much more closely than usual, with someone guarding almost every intersection. Moreover, the number of people in each team had increased to three to five, and they maintained a subtle distance from each other.
Perhaps it was because the silence had lasted too long, or perhaps the man in black outside the window reminded her of something, Xiaobai moved forward slightly, leaned towards the passenger seat, and asked a question.
"Is the impact on Uncle Qiu's side significant?"
The words melted into the air. After a moment, the man in the passenger seat moved slightly, and Xiaobai could see the silver hair on the back of his head flash in the light and shadow of the car window.
Mai Qiyao didn't turn around; the voice came from ahead.
"big."
He paused for a moment, then continued, "This incident is too serious. Old Qiu won't have an easy time. He was taken away for questioning before the meeting."
Qiu Ying's father is a high-ranking member of the Men in Black. This spy incident occurred within his system, and regardless of whether he was aware of it or not, he cannot escape responsibility.
In the official system, a meeting can be a big deal or a small deal, but since the word "take away" is used, it is obviously not as simple as asking a few questions.
Xiao Bai clenched her fists a little tighter when she heard this.
"Is his Yingying doing well with you?"
"Yes, it's fine."
"Okay." The man in the passenger seat sighed, shifted his body slightly, and made a soft sound in his chair. "There might be a chance to see him at the meeting tomorrow or the day after. I'll give him a message so he can feel more at ease."
"Heh, if you really want peace of mind, you shouldn't go to any dangerous areas!" A cold female voice, laced with contempt and anger, came from the driver's seat.
Xiao Bai didn't say anything; she knew that whatever she said at this moment would be inappropriate.
The father and daughter both fell silent at the same time.
Seeing that no one responded, Su Lingyi grew a little annoyed. "Fine, you did a great job, Xiaobai!"
"You truly are your father's good daughter!"
"I told you not to go to dangerous areas, I told you not to go! Now, it's not enough for the father to have one child, he wants to have another for his daughter too!"
"And they have to be top-tier, right? Wow, the McGregor family's got guts! They've got two top-tier clubs!"
Her tone became increasingly agitated as she spoke.
"Drive carefully first, we'll talk about it when we get home..." Mai Qiyao reached out to hold his wife's arm to comfort her, but Su Lingyi slapped his arm away.
But she didn't continue shouting. She just kept a straight face, her gaze returning to the road ahead, her hands gripping the steering wheel, and pressing the accelerator harder than before.
Soon, the car turned into the villa area and returned home.
Because they were all called to meetings at the last minute, the family of three hadn't eaten, so they contacted the housekeeper in advance to arrange dinner.
The three of them tidied up briefly and then sat down at the dining table.
Su Lingyi still had that angry look on her face, sitting coldly to the side.
Mai Qiyao then invited the two to eat, saying, "Eat first, eat first." He took out a bottle of red wine, opened it, and poured some into all three of their glasses.
He walked over to Su's mother and gently put his hand on her shoulder, but Su's mother reacted in the same way as any angry woman.
He twisted his shoulders, trying to shake off his father's hand.
"No tantrums during meals, that's a rule you set yourself!" Mr. Mai whispered in Mrs. Su's ear, earning a big eye roll from her in return.
Mr. Mai didn't seem to care at all, and said with a smile, "Your mother hasn't been home for a long time either. She's finally back today, so let's have a drink."
Su Lingyi snorted and curled her lip downwards: "So I should celebrate your daughter making you proud?"
Despite her harsh words, she still reached out and picked up her wine glass, and the three glasses clinked gently in the middle of the table, making a crisp sound.
"Thanks for your hard work."
"Thanks for your hard work!"
"Thanks for your hard work!"
Xiao Bai took a sip; she didn't have the habit of drinking alcohol. Fortunately, the red wine wasn't harsh on her throat, only a warm sensation spreading through her stomach.
The three of them started eating; after such a long meeting, they were actually quite hungry.
While eating, they chatted idly, and there were no unpleasant topics discussed at the dinner table.
Some of the amusing stories told by Mr. Mai made Mrs. Su laugh several times.
It was as if the tense atmosphere that had just been in the car had never existed.
Of course, this relaxation only lasts until the end of the meal.
Seeing that all three of them had put down their chopsticks, Su's mother's expression turned serious again, as if she had transformed back into that aloof UN representative.
She spoke first, her tone earnest, "Xiaobai, what's the situation with your club? If it's not working out, just register it under Longteng. You can manage it from now on, and don't go into dangerous areas anymore."
Xiaobai pursed her lips. What was bound to happen had finally happened. She sighed. In fact, her mother had already made many concessions.
At first, her mother wouldn't let her get involved in these things at all. Later, she secretly set up a club, which her mother found out about. The two had a fight and were in a cold war for almost two months.
"Mom, this is a club I created myself. It has nothing to do with Dad's side. I won't register it under Longteng's name."
Su Lingyi frowned. "The official channels have already recognized you as a top-tier club, proving your ability. Isn't that enough?"
Su's mother raised her voice slightly. She really didn't understand why her daughter had to choose such a dangerous path when she had two bright and promising options.
Although she didn't want her husband to work in a dangerous area, she knew it was impossible; such a big club couldn't just quit like that.
If their daughter has to risk her life and suffer, then all the hardships they, as parents, have endured over the years have been for nothing.
